Beetaloo Basin unconventional play
Report summary
The Beetaloo Basin is an early-stage shale play in northern Australia. Exploration and appraisal are being driven in response to a tight domestic gas market with strong prices and the potential for low-carbon LNG exports. Regulation is tight and costs are high. Drilling is seasonal, as the four-month wet season inundates much of the area and makes unsealed roads impassable. Gas infrastructure is limited, and heavy investment will be needed to fully develop the play. However, the geology appears favourable: TOC is high and the shales are extensive (up to 35,600 km2), so the size of the prize is attractive.
